MODERN ISRAEL: BEYOND BAMBA AND BEN YEHUDA

MODERN ISRAEL:

BEYOND BAMBA AND BEN YEHUDA

Instructor:  Marilyn Fine

The modern state of Israel is a vibrant blend of ancient and modern, religious and secular.  In a mere seven decades, it has absorbed massive numbers of immigrants from around the world and has established itself as a world leader in science and technology.

But these accomplishments have not happened easily or by chance.  Especially situated as it is among hostile neighbors, Israel has had to be creative and resourceful in its efforts to grow and thrive.  This course will help students become aware of Israel’s modern history, as well as its rich and diverse culture.  Among the topics to be addressed are:

Zionism: Before and After Theodor Herzl

The Israeli Political System

The Challenges of Statehood

Israel’s History as Told Through Photos

The Fight for Modern Hebrew

The Contributions of the Edot:  Moroccan, Yemenite, Ethiopian, and Russian

Israeli Music as a Reflection of Its History
